A series with a primary sequence of the protagonist climbing a tower – with specific musical accompaniment. A game where the protagonist is going to climb a tower, or two, or three before all’s said and done. Choosing to make an MSU out of this series recommended itself on the strength of that idea alone.
Is there much to choose between the Rose Bride and Princess Zelda? Either way, you’d be saving someone from being used by malicious actors to no good end. Strike up the classic sounds of Utena, raise your sword, and defend yourself against all comers.
The Absolute Destiny: Apocalypse
This takes me back. Way, way back. It wasn’t the first anime I ever saw, but it was within the first couple of years of that time, so it’s certainly foundational to my history with that particular medium. It probably has the artistic foibles of its time, but I have too much nostalgia to notice, and even that’s beside the point. It always had panache and flair to burn, from the characters to the strangely minimalist set design in spots to the directorial choices, and, of course, the music. The first time I heard what I instantly termed a ‘duel theme’, I was hooked. It’s just a shame that they’re all about 10x as long as LTTP boss fights, but I used them there anyway, because how could I not?
Because of that, there are lyrics all over this pack. If that’s not your jam, I get it. But if you want something a lot different, or you’ve got the same nostalgia that I have, this may just be the MSU for you.
Notable track: Zettai Unmei Mokushiroku (The Absolute Destiny Apocalypse) — What else? It’s the tower-climbing song that spawned the whole idea for the pack.
