A while back I had a conversation with Shareen about MSU projects that I was thinking of doing. We were chatting quite a bit about what kind of Mario Party MSU ideas I had, but that I was struggling with how to organize and/or condense the packs given how much music there was.
One of the things he touched upon was how the Smash Bros. soundtracks were similar to Mario Party, in the sense that they evolved significantly over time in terms of volume.
I mentioned before that I played Smash 64 for literal years spanning high school and college, and fast forward 20 years and my son has played tons of SSBU for a couple of years. I’d play with him here and there, but it didn’t really dawn on me how much music there was in this game until Shareen and I talked about the evolution of the Smash franchise.
He told me that there were gigs of music out there (11.7 GB is what I found) and that it was possible to make so many different kinds of MSU’s from it, but more importantly that it would be up my alley. After going through a bunch of it, it was clear that (1) he was right about it being up my alley and (2) that it was going to be interesting to see how different packs came together.
If there’s one thing that should be evident of the MSU’s I have made, I LOVE remixes/covers of old school stuff. Working on Super Smash Brothers Ultimate ended up being a fantastic project to tap into the nostalgia while also bringing something fresh.
To start with this game, I have made two packs – this one with Mega Man tracks, and the other from Castlevania (Simon). Admittedly, in terms of selection I cheated a little bit because these are two of the larger libraries (with 65 combined tracks). I do have a couple of other “mix” ideas that hopefully I get to someday, but in the meantime you’ll just have to enjoy these absolute banger remixes put out for these two characters.
