Your family is injured, maybe dead, at the hands of evil masquerading as good. Set out with the burning need for vengeance in your heart, even as the world turns its back on you, and strike a balance that only a vilified hero can! Just remember to take this wide-ranging MSU pack with you, because if it’s dangerous for a hero to go alone, a hero in villain’s clothing may need all the help in the world.
I got to Berseria by a somewhat circuitous route. Tales of Destiny on the PS1, which I loved, was my first ‘Tales of’ game. And then I didn’t play another one until Zestiria (the pair/precursor to Berseria), which was… well, it was okay. I still haven’t beaten it. But I liked the idea of a modernized Tales game, and Satou Rina voicing the protagonist Velvet Crowe in a very non-JRPG-typical revenge story hooked me instantly. Enough, in fact, that I may go back and finish Zestiria eventually, simply on the strength of how much I loved Berseria.
A lot of that strength rests on the soundtrack by long-time ‘Tales of…’ series hand Sakuraba Motoi. There’s definitely a ‘Tales’ sound, which I know not everybody is in for. Maybe if I’d played all the intervening games, that would’ve been me as well. But as-is, I just can’t get enough of it.
The only disappointing part is that nobody has made a Velvet Crowe sprite… yet.
Notable track: Man, I wanna say everything, because I love this whole soundtrack so much, but… Let’s try again.
Notable track: A new path — I love big energy like this for mirror/portal effects. If you don’t believe me, try the Persona 4 and .hack// packs some time.
