The first time I played Super Mario RPG was the first time I played any RPG and I was hooked from the first moment I saw it. It was not released in Europe back in the day but a friend of my parent’s had an NTSC-converter and a bunch of imports. Their copy was flawed though and could not retain saves, but I kept trying to visit their house to play this amazing one-of-a-kind Mario adventure, even if I had to start over each and every time I went back.
Eventually I saved up enough to get my own NTSC-converter and a copy of the game, which I ordered from the back of a Super Power magazine – and it was glorious from start to finish.
When I discovered MSUs for ALTTPR the SMRPG pack became a staple immediately, and I used it almost exclusively for over a year. The upbeat unique take by the composer Yoko Shimomura just makes you happy each and every time you hear any of her pieces.
The biggest hype of 2023 was when Nintendo released the news that they were remaking SMRPG for the Switch – not because I wanted to replay the game. No, it was because Yoko was returning as the composer. I knew instantly that I had to make an MSU pack as soon as I could get my hands on the OST.
The remake has captured the original style perfectly. Each track is unique and either upbeat, cozy, or mysterious. A lot of the selections by me is going to be similar to the original SMRPG MSU packs, but I made numerous deviations by personal taste and experimentation.
It is a fully extended MSU pack, and almost every track from the OST is featured somewhere in the game. I hope you enjoy!
