Void Stranger is a game that, to me, came out of seemingly nowhere. I first heard of it on the German ALttPR discord where another user (thanks CubeSoldier!) heartily recommended it. The game’s genre matched my taste and so I decided to give it a go – resulting in a gaming experience I’d never be going to forget.
This, however, is not supposed to be a review of the game itself, so I’ll cut to the music, which is a natural blend featuring memorable retro chiptune sequences, haunting piano melodies, energetic beats and a subliminal drive that is burnt into your mind if you’ve spent countless of hours by the dozen trying to solve the puzzles in the game.
The vision of this MSU pack was to include as many tracks from the OST into the ALttP world as possible. I’ve also taken some creative liberties to trim the beginnings of some of the dungeon and boss tracks. There’s a big rationale behind that decision: Typically, dungeon dips or clears in normal ALttPR modes take around 2-4 minutes while the corresponding dungeon tracks in Void Stranger are in the 3-6 minute range.
Most of the music in Void Stranger has a buildup at the beginning that generates the long-term atmosphere of the tracks. Some of them might take 2 minutes to get into the meat of the song or have unique parts in the latter half – players would actually not be hearing the ‘important’ parts of the song during normal gameplay, because they’d be out of the dungeon/boss fight by then.
HOWEVER! Dungeon dips in Door Randomizer usually last much longer, which is where I’d highly suggest using the original version of the songs, because the extra buildup will just be worth it. They are included in a separate folder (“uncut”). I suggest creating a duplicate of this pack for an “uncut” version of the MSU where you replace the respective main tracks with the uncut ones. I still highly recommend using the cut version if not playing Door Randomizer (unless you enjoy casually strolling around in dungeons :] ).
The following tracks have an “uncut” version:
17+35: Void Symphony (Eastern Palace / Light World Dungeon)
22+39: Rage Rave (Palace of Darkness / Dark World Dungeon)
38: Lax Lullaby (Swamp Palace)
40: Buzzing Boogie (Misery Mire)
44: Affection Air (Thieves’ Town) <– This track especially has many parts and takes 5:30!
46: Getting To Your Manager (Ganon’s Tower)
While Track 9 (playing in the Dark World) is also trimmed by around 22 seconds at the start, I opted not to include it because the amount of in-game segments where the player will be in the Dark World for longer than a minute continuously is too low on average to justify hearing only the buildup of the song way more often than the actual main part of the song.
